ZESTY HALF AND HALF

I love ice tea and drink it all year long. There is always a jar brewing on my countertop; what is called sun tea. A big squeeze of lemon juice or two or three are always added...no sugar. In restaurants I often order that drink named after a famous golfer. I love the combo of ice tea and lemon juice. Sometimes it is called a half and half because that is the ratio of ice tea to lemon and water. My version has a rim of lemon zest to punctuate the flavor of the lemon.

This drink is not as strong as a greyhound or a salty dog, but it is cuter and more user friendly--like just about every breed that has been mixed with a poodle! - NWB

Mock Jaboticaba Pop

This recipe was inspired by a friend of mine that lives in Hawaii. She has a jaboticaba shrub growing on her property. A little while ago she was telling another friend of ours and myself about the fruit on the tree. We asked her to try making a jelly out of it, and then of course send us some. She had never canned anything before and we were sort of far away to be able to help her, so her first attempt ended up being more of a syrup. Her second attempt resulted in a jelly and she sent us jars of each. The syrup is perfect for making soda with. The fruit remimded me of something between a blackberry and a cranberry and so with a little tinkering I came up with my mock jaboticaba syrup.

Summer Seltzer, Winter Wellness

When a friend told me she and her husband were drinking Turmeric-Ginger Tea during cold season, I asked how they made it, and she came with a recipe in hand, without another reminder! I made it and was deeply pleased with it. But now it's summer, the temperature's reading in the 80's, and I wanted something cold when I came in from gardening. So here's the summer version, thirst quenching and energizing. I've left it at the purist stage, but the original directions included sugar and milk, if you prefer.

Raspberry Lambic Float

This comes from my friend Danny. My friend Danny who hates dessert. Several years ago we used to have these Iron Chef offs. Four of us would each make two dishes in amuse bouche form. Then we invited two friends to be our Jeffrey Steingartens. They would blind judge and deem someone the winner. I don’t think Danny won for this dish but he should have. I recreated this recipe last summer when having my annual girls, weekend with my god-daughters (I made theirs with raspberry soda). The picture is a larger format then what the recipe calls for.

Lime Mint Spritz

Moving to the desert has given me a new obsession with cold drinks- you can only convince yourself to chug so much water! This recipe sprung from a local deli's lime spritzer offering that I craved every day last summer and the fact that I just can't tame my mint! So what if I accidentally re-invented a mojito? I certainly won't judge if you a splash of rum (preferably white).

Violet Lassi

This recipe was created because we were at the wonderful Radiance Dairy in Fairfield, Iowa and wanted to try their yogurt -- also their fields were full of violets. These mystical flowers have many health benefits including bountiful Vitamin C and anti-oxidants. The blueberries are included because the violet color didn't come through when I first made it on the road -- they should make it seem a little more like a violet drink. Alternatively, you can take out the honey and blueberries and use this as a sauce for a light fish, or serve it with dandelion fritters (recipe also on food52).

Coffee Cream of Wheat

Have you ever worked 21 twelve hour shifts at a hospital and tried to get up the next morning to make cream of wheat for the kids for school? I grabbed the coffee instead of the milk and didn't realize it until the kids said oh yuck MOM ! I couldn't throw it away so I added some milk and sugar to my bowl and ate it. Now it's the only way I make it for myself.

Kahlúa Café

Coffee isn’t just for breakfast and I just looove a rich cup of coffee after a delicious home cooked meal. Better yet, add a shot of Kahlúa and a dollop of fresh whipped cream and you have the perfect cup of coffee. The sweetness of the sugar cane in the Kahlúa makes this coffee a perfect dessert. Add a hint of fresh cinnamon by using a cinnamon stick to stir in the whipped cream.

Apple-Spice Breakfast Soup

Years ago, when I lived in Austin, Tex., I had a little business selling hot cups of soup to vendors and shoppers on the “Drag” in front of the University of Texas. This soup was always a favorite on a chilly day. It’s sweet and spicy, and although you can serve it at lunch or dinner, I prefer it for breakfast, with more yogurt stirred in. Use whole-grain sandwich bread if you can.

Iced Coffee

Every year, usually around this time, I feel the strong urge to make the shift from hot coffee to iced -- and once I switch, I usually stick with it until fall rolls around. It's a bit of a coffee conviction. And I happen to be more particular about my iced coffee than my lattés and drips. To me, it's important that the coffee be strong enough to stand up to a generous ration of milk, but there should be enough ice to ensure that the coffee stays cold, and the sides of the cup dewy. The solution to what seems like an insurmountable challenge? Espresso ice cubes, of course! With just an ice cube tray and a little planning, you too can soon be sipping a frigid, rich iced coffee in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Iced and Spiced

Is there nothing new under the sun? I wish I knew where this originally came from. I know that a google search tells me that it's not all that original, but since I found a version of it in my trusty box of recipes from my Grandmother, I've updated it to my own coffee preferences and my Bialetti. Mine is a nine cup. - TiggyBee
